Read as a time budget, 150 questions in 120 minutes leaves roughly 48 seconds per question — and that already includes the time spent reading a long statement-based question twice. Candidates rarely fail this paper because they did not know enough. They fail it because four minutes went into a question that was never going to resolve.
The quarter-mark penalty also changes the arithmetic of guessing. A blind guess across four options is break-even at best; a guess after eliminating two options is usually worth taking. Practising with the penalty switched on is the only way that judgement becomes automatic rather than something you try to calculate mid-paper.
Because Prelims is qualifying, the score does not carry into your final rank. Its only job is to put you in the Mains hall. That argues for a strategy built on securing the sections you can be certain about — state-specific general knowledge above all — rather than gambling on breadth.
How State PSC Exams Differ from SSC and Railway Exams
Three stages, not tiers
A State PSC recruitment runs prelims, then a descriptive mains, then an interview. SSC exams and railway exams stay objective throughout. If you are moving across from SSC preparation, the descriptive stage is the genuinely new skill, and it rewards writing practice rather than more multiple-choice drilling.
State-weighted general studies
National exams test general awareness broadly. A state commission tests its own state heavily — its history, its geography, its administrative structure and its current schemes. This is the biggest single difference in what you should be revising, and it is also the most tractable, because that material is finite and repeats across cycles.
Language and medium
State papers are commonly set bilingually, and many candidates write in the regional language. Practising in the medium you will actually use matters more here than in a national exam, which is why the practice sets carry both English and Hindi.
