Why Practice Data Sufficiency?

  • Tests whether the data are enough, not the final answer
  • Each answer was checked by counting every case that each statement leaves open
  • Each set is 15 questions in 12 minutes with 1/3 negative marking

Concepts You Will Master

  • Check statement I alone, then statement II alone, then both together
  • Data are sufficient only when exactly one answer is left
  • Two statements that say the same thing in different words do not add information
  • Position from the left = total − position from the right + 1
  • Direction needs both the north-south and the east-west displacement
  • A two-digit number is fixed by its two digits; a digit sum or digit difference alone usually is not enough

Preparation Tip

Do not solve the question fully. Ask only whether a single answer is possible from statement I, from statement II and from both. Stop as soon as you know.

About Data Sufficiency

Data Sufficiency questions give a question and two statements. You decide whether the statements are enough to answer it. These six sets use day puzzles, positions in a row, ages, directions, two-digit numbers and height comparisons. The explanation of every question lists what each statement alone leaves open and what both together leave.
